About Dr. Canty

A Little About Dr. Canty

Dr. Jayme Canty is an intersectional humanities scholar activist with a focus on the experiences of Black women and Black queer persons, specifically those living in or from the American South.

Educational Background

She received her Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Agricultural &Technical State University (NC A&T) in Political Science. After working as a paralegal in for two years, she returned to complete her Master of Arts degree in Africana Women’s Studies at Clark Atlanta University.  She stayed at Clark Atlanta University to obtain a Ph.D. in Humanities with concentrations in Africana Women’s Studies and Political Science in Fall 2017.  

Research Background and Interests

  • Previous Research 
    • Her thesis research entitled, ““From Mother to Daughter: An Analysis of Intergenerational Activism among African-American Women from 1960-1960" 
    • She completed her dissertation research entitled, “The ‘Swelling Wave of Oppression’: An Intersectional Study of the Health Challenges of Black Heterosexual Women and Black Queer Women in the American South.”
  • Current Research
    • Her current research chronicles the collective narrative Southern Black queer lesbian women and gender non-conforming persons, uncovering how the American (US) South shapes and molds their lived experiences. Her forthcoming manuscript, Snapping Beans: Voices of a Black Queer Lesbian South, outlines the ways the South informs their intersectional identities.
